Mbps vs MB: Understanding Your Fiber Speed

Mbps and MB are not the same thing. Mb (megabits) measures your connection’s speed; MB (megabytes) measures a file’s size. The key fact: 8 megabits equal 1 megabyte. That’s why 600 Mb fiber downloads at around 75 MB per second. Here’s the full picture, once and for all.

The difference between Mb and MB in one sentence

A bit is the smallest unit of information. A byte is 8 bits. That’s where all the confusion comes from:

  • Mb (megabit): used to measure connection speed. You’ll see it as Mbps (megabits per second) on your fiber plan.
  • MB (megabyte): used to measure file size. The weight of a photo, a video, or a download.

The golden rule: 8 Mb = 1 MB. That’s why a connection speed and a download, even though they sound similar, speak two different languages.

Why they get mixed up so often

The confusion comes from the near-identical abbreviations. Providers advertise speed in megabits (Mb) because that’s the technical standard for networks. Your browser or download manager, on the other hand, shows progress in megabytes (MB), because that’s how we measure files.

The result: you sign up for “600 Mb” and see a file downloading at “75 MB/s”. It looks like you’re getting less than promised, but it’s actually the opposite: everything is working perfectly. You’re just looking at the same speed expressed in two different units.

The formula to convert Mbps to MB/s

Converting is very simple. Just divide or multiply by 8:

  • From speed to real download rate: Mbps ÷ 8 = MB/s
  • From download rate to speed: MB/s × 8 = Mbps

Example: 600 Mb fiber ÷ 8 = 75 MB/s theoretical maximum download speed. 1 Gb (1000 Mb) ÷ 8 = 125 MB/s.

These times are theoretical: the real result depends on the server you’re downloading from, your WiFi, and your device. But they give you a very close estimate.

What fiber speed do you actually need?

More megabits doesn’t always mean a better experience: it means you can do more things at once without anything slowing down. This general guide can help you decide:

  • Basic use (1-2 people): browsing, social media, and shows on one screen. 300-600 Mb is more than enough.
  • Connected household (3-4 people): several screens at once, remote work, and gaming. 600 Mb performs brilliantly here.
  • Heavy use: remote work with large file uploads, 4K streaming on multiple TVs, frequent heavy downloads. 1 Gb is your best option.

The factor almost nobody looks at: symmetry

There’s a fact just as important as speed: whether your fiber is symmetrical or not. Symmetrical means you upload at the same speed you download.

Most people only pay attention to download speed (downloading files, watching videos), but upload speed is what really matters for video calls, uploading files to the cloud, remote work, or livestreaming.
