How to Lower Your Internet and Mobile Bill

By ·

To lower your internet and mobile bill, start by checking your real data and speed usage, cutting services and extras you don’t use, and comparing your plan with what’s on the market. If you’re overpaying, negotiate with your provider or switch to a more competitive one. Following these steps, it’s common to save several euros a month without losing service quality.

1. Go through your bill line by line

The first step to spending less is understanding why you’re paying what you’re paying. Grab your latest bill and break down each item:

  • Fiber fee: what speed are you signed up for, and how much does it cost?
  • Mobile fee: data, minutes and number of lines.
  • Extras: TV platforms, secondary lines, insurance, premium services.
  • Expired promotions: the most common reason behind a sudden price jump. Many discounts only last a few months, and once they end, the fee goes back to the standard price without much of a heads-up.

If your bill has gone up without you changing anything, it’s almost always an expired promotion. Spotting it is the first saving you’ll make.

2. Match your plan to your real usage

We overpay out of fear of running short, but most households sign up for more than they actually use. Check your real usage from the last few months in your customer area or your provider’s app.

On mobile

Check your average monthly data usage. If you’re on a 100 GB plan but only use 20 GB, you’re paying for capacity that goes to waste. The ideal is having a comfortable margin without pushing the price up — and it’s even better if your data is rollover: whatever you don’t use one month carries over to the next, so you’re not throwing money away.

On fiber

Speed affects price. For remote work, video calls, several screens at once or gaming, 600 Mb symmetrical fiber is usually plenty; if your home has large downloads or lots of devices, 1 Gb gives you extra peace of mind. Symmetrical fiber (the same speed for uploads and downloads) makes a real difference when uploading files or backing up to the cloud.

3. Cut the extras you don’t use

Add-on services are the biggest culprits behind inflated bills. Time for a clear-out:

  • TV platforms or channels you no longer watch.
  • Inactive secondary mobile lines.
  • Device insurance or premium services you signed up for and forgot about.
  • International calls or premium-rate services you don’t need.

Cancelling two or three small extras can add up to a noticeable saving by the end of the year.

4. Bundle fiber and mobile into a single package

Having fiber with one company and mobile with another usually works out pricier than a combined package. Bundling everything with a single provider almost always brings the total down and simplifies things along the way: one bill, one customer service line.

Situation Risk Solution
Fiber and mobile separately You pay two fees with no combined discount Bundle into one package
A plan from years ago Outdated price, no 5G Check current offers
Expired promotion Automatic fee increase Renegotiate or switch

5. Negotiate or switch providers

Once you know what you need and what’s on the market, you have two options:

Negotiate with your provider

Call customer service, explain that you’re considering other offers, and ask what they can do for you. Sometimes they’ll apply a loyalty discount. It works, but it’s usually temporary: check when it expires so the price doesn’t creep back up on you.

Switch providers

If negotiating doesn’t cut it, comparing and switching is usually the most cost-effective option. Before you do, check your current contract’s terms (especially any minimum term and equipment you need to return) to avoid penalties. And remember: if you want to keep your number, don’t cancel on your own — request number porting through your new provider instead.

Review your plan at least once a year

The telecoms market moves fast: what was a good deal two years ago can be overpriced today, and missing features that are now standard, like 5G or roaming included across the EU. Set a yearly reminder to review your bill and compare it with current plans. That simple habit stops you from settling into an outdated price, and it’s probably the easiest way to avoid quietly overpaying month after month.

Checklist to lower your bill

  • Break down your bill and spot expired promotions.
  • Compare your real usage with what you’re signed up for.
  • Cut extras, channels and lines you don’t use.
  • Consider bundling fiber and mobile into one package.
  • Negotiate or compare offers, and switch if it’s worth it.
  • Use number porting to keep your number without any interruption.

The real saving is paying only for what you actually use

Lowering your bill doesn’t mean giving up speed or coverage — it means no longer paying for capacity you don’t use and extras you don’t need. Comparing every so often is the best habit for avoiding a plan that’s quietly become overpriced.
